The action takes place in 1867. Sarcany and Zirone are two unscrupulous men who want to make money the easy way. They have no money and they are hungry. In a small park in Trieste, they notice an exhausted pigeon and catch it. A pigeon has a coded message tied to its leg. Sarcany overwrites the content of the message and returns it to where it was. They release a pigeon and follow its flight from a height. They discover the place of landing and through further monitoring and research they learn that the message was for Mathias Sandorf, who together with two friends is planning actions for the independence of Hungary from the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Sarcany becomes Mathias Sandorf's personal secretary with the help of banker Silas Toronthal. He discovers how he can decipher a message that reveals the intentions of Mathias Sandorf and friends. Sarcany reports the conspirators to the Austrian police in exchange for a cash reward, the police captures them and takes them to Istria in a carriage.
